Xtreme 18U wins own tournament

The Webster Xtreme 18U team won the Webster Xtreme Tournament. The Webster Xtreme 18U softball team finished its 2010 tournament season by winning the host tournament championship.

The Xtreme started the weekend with a 3-2 loss to the Amherst Lighting on Saturday. The game was tied 1-1 until the sixth inning when the Lighting went ahead on a two-run homer.

Corrin Spallone was on the mound for Webster, striking out six batters while giving up five  hits.
Next the Xtreme faced the Penfield Cobras and won a close game 2-1. Erika Hoppner started for the Xtreme and got the win scattering six hits and striking out nine. Amanda Dulan was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice.

In the last game of the day, the Xtreme beat the Monroe Blazers, 7-3. Rebecca Hudson got the start and the win while Spallone picked up the save.

Steph Armbruster, Kelly Carolan, Rachel Drojak, and Caitlin Albano each were 2-for-3 for the Xtreme. Maria Vallone led the offence with three hits.

The Xtreme were the No. 2 seed going into the single elimination rounds on Sunday. Webster drew a bye to the semifinal round and had to face the Penfield Cobras.

The Xtreme combined excellent pitching along with outstand offense to beat Penfield, 11-1. Hoppner pitched a three-hitter to shut down the Cobras.

On offense, Sara Bellanca, Mel Englert, and Betsy Burns all hit two-run doubles. Hudson was 2-for-2 and Sarah Roza had an RBI single.

The Xtreme now had to face the top-seeded Amherst Lighting, who were undefeated in the tournament. Hoppner broke a scoreless tie in the second with a solo home run.

Tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Carolan hit a double and Vallone followed with an RBI single as the Xtreme went up 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning with two runners on base and no outs, Carolan and Bellanca turned the double play, and the last batter struck out to seal the victory for the Xtreme.

Spallone earned the win on the mound, striking out five and only giving up four hits.
