Webster school district employees Rich Whitbourne and Steve Ange work on pipes near a field that will have work done on it this year. It's part of many construction projects under way across the district.

Webster schools are in a good place to start the year, construction-wise. The last phase of a $48 million construction project approved in 2006 is wrapping up, with crews working on air handling units in district schools. That project focused on improving heating and ventilation systems, electrical and plumbing systems, and also included classroom renovations.

As that project is completed, the first steps in a $7.9 million overhaul to district fine arts and athletic facilities will begin.

That project, approved last year, will renovate both high school auditoriums, each built more than 40 years ago. The stage, lights, sound system, acoustics and seats will all be upgraded or replaced.

“The goal was to have our facilities match the talent of our students, and really enhance what they can do,” Superintendent Adele Bovard said.

The auditorium work is set to begin after winter break, and is expected to be finished for spring dramatic productions. The Schroeder High School athletic field will be evened out and artificial turf will be added. These improvements will allow the field to be used for a variety of sports.

Thomas High School will gain a competition and practice field, which will also have artificial turf. Lights and scoreboards will also be installed.
Construction is expected to begin mid-autumn, with both fields to be ready for spring sports, district officials said.

Q&A with Superintendent Adele Bovard

What will your first day be like?

I will try to get to all 11 buildings, just to be there, feel and see the support our students have. I like to feel that energy. We look forward all summer long to students arriving back in our districts. I’m surprised each year, too, at how quickly learning begins. Students are focused and engaged, and there is enthusiasm and passion from day one.

Leadership changes?

Glenn Weidor will be taking over as principal at Thomas High School.

Curriculum, activity or course changes?

We will be continuing the Young Entrepreneurs Academy for the second year. The physical education program will be working on their choice program, as well, that teaches juniors and seniors how to be a part of lifelong fitness and to make healthy lifestyle choices.
