Among those killed is Lt. Mike Chiapperini of the Webster Police Department, who is also a firefighter.
One of the firefighters who was killed by a shooter as he responded to a blaze in Webster this morning, Monday, Dec. 24, is Lt. Mike Chiapperini, a Webster Police Department lieutenant, who was off-duty and was responding as a volunteer firefighter.
Another of the emergency responders who was injured was an off-duty Greece Police Officer, John Ritter, who happened to be in the area.
Also killed was firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka, and injured were Joseph Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter.
Chiapperini was just promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant in the Webster Police Department in August 2010.
According to a press conference at Strong just in the past few minutes, both Scardino and Hofstetter are in guarded condition and in the intensive care unit. Both have significant injuries. Hofstetter has a serious spine injury and a bullet lodged on his spine bone. Scardino was shot twice, including once in the chest area.
The hospital said it would likely not have further updates for a few days.
A total of eight homes and at least one vehicle were heavily damaged or destroyed by the fire.
Police said about 33 residents in the area were evacuated from their homes during the blaze.
Police also said the person they believe was the shooter was found dead, and a gun was found, but no other details was available.
