Rochester —
The Rochester Americans had their four-game winning streak come to an end on Friday, Dec. 30 in a 5-4 loss to American Hockey League North Division rival Hamilton at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Amerks fell in front of a season-high crowd of 9,771, but despite the setback, they remained in second place in the division with a 15-13-4-1 record.
"We had a great crowd tonight, first off," Amerks head coach Ron Rolston stated in a release. "I thought that was one of the better games we've played in this stretch. It's really disappointing and frustrating overall because our guys put it all on the line again tonight, and we lost to Hamilton again."
Derek Whitmore, Mark Voakes and Paul Szczechura all scored goals, while Hamilton was paced by Mitch Wahl, who scored twice.
Drew MacIntyre and David Leggio combined for 25 saves for the Amerks, 11 by Leggio. Robert Mayer stopped 35 shots to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
Voakes tied the game at 1-1 and Rochester led 2-1 after Phil Varone scored on a power-play goal. Varone has scored at least one point in the last five games.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 2-2 on a goal by Wahl but the Americans went in front 3-2 on a goal by Whitmore just 80 seconds into the second period. Whitmore leads the team in goals with 14.
With the score tied at 3-3, Szczechura had his pass attempt bounce off the skate of Joe Callahans and into the net as the Amerks moved in front 4-3. Hamilton tied the game at 4-4 and got the winning goal on a shot by Aaron Palushaj, who scored off a rebound on a Bulldogs power play.
Rochester is off until Friday, Jan. 6 when the Amerks take on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 7:05 p.m. at the Mohegan Sun Arena. It will be the second and final meeting of the year between the Amerks and Penguins.
