The Western athletes dominated the Empire State Games in the Buffalo area last week. capturing the most gold, silver, and bronze medals of the six regions in the state.
Western amassed 104 gold, 78 silver, and 59 bronze medals. Long Island was second in gold with 39; Central was second in silver with 57, and Long Island was second in bronze with 56.
The Webster athletes contributed their share to the region’s success.
Basketball
Alex Tanea scored 11 points in Scholastic boys basketball bronze medal game as Western beat Long Island, 75-64. He contributed 10 points in a 99-92 loss to Hudson Valley, and netted 11 points in the 72-61 loss to Central. Tanea tallied 10 points in the 67-55 victory over Long Island in the pool round.
Canoeing/Kayaking
Paul Dorscheid earned the silver medal in the Open mens K-4 500 meters, and silver in the K-2 mens 200. He placed fifth in the K-2 mens 500.
Cycling
Greg Brett won the bronze medal in the Masters 45-54 mens Road race.
Field hockey
Shannon Hutteman from Webster Thomas missed out of a medal in Scholastic field hockey team as the team tied Adirondack 1-1 in the bronze medal game, but ended up taking fourth.
Lacrosse
Claire Costanza, Erin Monna, and Shauna Pugliese brought home the silver medal in Scholastic girls lacrosse as Long Island won the gold with a 17-7 victory.
Pugliese had one goal and one assist in an 11-10 win over Adirondack in pool play, as Costanza had one goal.
J.T. Hauck and Mike Messina earned the bronze medal Scholastic boys lacrosse as Western beat Adirondack, 13-6. Messina scored one goal in that match. He had two assists in the 8-1 victory over Adirondack in pool play.
Hauck had a goal and assist in the 10-7 win over Hudson Valley in pool play.
Soccer
Olivia Derleth received the silver medal scholastic girls soccer as Western lost the gold medal game to Adirondack, 1-0.
Soccer goalie Michael Konzel, 16, from Webster Thomas High School made nine saves while sharing time in goal in a 4-1 loss to Long Island in pool play.
Swimming
John Sherry placed first in the Masters mens 50-54 swimming 1500 meter free, 800 free, 400 IM, 200 butterfly, and 400 free; and silver in the 200 IM and 200 free.
Track
Brycen Spratling earned gold Open mens track 400 meter dash in 48.75 seconds, and as as member of the 4x400 relay team.
Volleyball
Kaitlin Costello and Lauren Costello won the gold Open womens volleyball with a 2-1 victory over Central in the gold medal match.
Mike Desino, Luke Lawatsch, and Matt McKrell brought home gold in Scholastic boys volleyball with a 2-1 triumph against Long Island in the gold medal match.
Amanda Sedore earned a gold medal in Scholastic girls volleyball with a 2-1 victory versus Long Island in the gold medal final.
Tim McDermott, Rick Putnam, and Roger Wolford competed in Masters men’s volleyball.
Wrestling
Kevin Sackett won the silver medal in the Greco Roman 167 weight class.
Matt Miller competed in Scholastic wrestling 123 weight class in freestyle and Greco Roman.
