Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will perform its annual “Side by Side with the RPO: Mahler’s Magic” with the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at 3 p.m. March 5 in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester.
Almost 90 teenage musicians from the Greater Rochester area, led by music director James Mick, will be joined by their RPO mentors for the performance. RPYO Concerto Competition winners Nicholas Pogharian, a senior trombonist from Pittsford Mendon High School; and Epongue Ekille, a senior violinist from Fairport High School, will be featured performers.
The program will include Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, movements 3 and 4; and Franz von Suppe’s “Poet and Peasant Overture.” Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors in advance, $17 for adults and $12 for seniors and students at the door.
March’s Philharmonics Series will start with “Stare Conducts Brahms 1” at 7:30 p.m. March 2 and 8 p.m. March 4 in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.
Music director Ward Stare will lead the program featuring noted Frederic Chopin interpreter and Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter. Music will include Johannes Brahms and Bright Sheng’s Intermezzo Op. 118, No. 2, “Black Swan.” Tickets start at $23.
