Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra recently announced its February performances.
The month will kick-off with Mozart’s Requiem at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 and 8 p.m. Feb. 4 in Kodak Hall, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester. The performance, conducted by Ward Stare, will feature the Eastman-Rochester Chorus under the direction of William Weinert with soloists Kathryn Lewek, Renee Tatum, Anthony Dean Griffey and Raymond Aceto. The intricate textures of the piece will be mirrored by Alan Hovhaness’ Fugue and Igor Stravinsky’s “War Symphony.”
RPO will present “The Science of Sound” at 10:15 a.m. Feb. 8-9 in Kodak Hall as part of its educational initiative that reaches more than 16,000 student each year. The interactive, multimedia concerts feature age- and curriculum-appropriate themes and are led by Michael Butterman, principal conductor for education and community engagement. This year’s program includes music from Georges Bizet, Johannes Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergei Prokofiev and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster will make her RPO debut at 8 p.m. Feb. 10-11 in Kodak Hall with principal pops conductor Jeff Tyzik. Foster has starred in “Anything Goes,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Little Women” in addition to current roles in “Sweet Charity” and TV Land’s “Younger.”
Stare will conduct “Romantic Classics with Stare and Denk” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 and 8 p.m. Feb. 18 in Kodak Hall. Pianist Jeremy Denk will perform Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, paired with Hector Berlioz’s Selections from “Romeo et Juliette.”
“Guitar Romances” will be led by Butterman and Eastman School of Music professor Nicholas Goluses at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Performance Hall at Hochstein, 50 N. Plymouth Ave., Rochester. The performance will feature Ottorino Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1, Antonio Vivaldi’s Guitar/Lute Concerto and Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Fantasia para un gentilhombre.” Eastman School of Music soprano Robin Steitz will join the orchestra for Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, Aria.
