A home in Orleans County was destroyed on Christmas Day after a reported explosion.
The explosion happened around 4 a.m. Sunday on Wilkins Road in Barre. Deputies say the call came in as a reported home explosion. The home is a total loss.
The owners, Don and Fonda Carr, were able to escape. Fonda suffered a minor cut to her head.
"It was just a big whoosh and the whole house was on fire," she says. "We ended up going through a window to get out, because the door would not open."
Fonda tells us she and her husband were inside when they heard a strange hissing noise and then a loud boom. They were able to escape with only a few bumps and bruises, but they tell us they are still coming to grips with the fact their home of more than forty years is now a pile of rubble.
All they have left are the pajamas they were wearing when they escaped and a melted firebox recovered by firefighters. But they say the generosity of the community has been overwhelming. They're thanking their lucky stars to be able to hug their loved ones again.
"It's been a nightmare, but you know what, we're all here, healthy, happy, we've got each other, and boy I'll tell you people are really wonderful," says Fonda Carr.
She says she can't thank the community enough for their outpouring of support.
A GoFundMe page has been setup to help the couple, who lived in the home for over 40 years. According to the GoFundMe page, “All they have are the pajamas they were wearing when they escaped, and a melted firebox recovered by firefighters.”
So far the GoFundMe page has raised over $8,000.
