Fairport High School Principal Chris Salinas never had Richard "Richie" Carlston as a student, but he said when his name is brought up around the school, "everyone's face lights up."

"He was a class act, he was very successful as a student and as an athlete," Salinas said. "He was just one of those special people. We were very fortunate to have known him and worked with him here."

Mr. Carlston, 19, died early Thursday morning after a his car rolled over on the Thruway in Seneca County Tuesday.

Friends setup a vigil near the high school with candles spelling Mr. Carlston's initials on Wednesday night. The spot is known as "Angel Hill," in memory of the five Fairport girls who died in a car crash in 2007.

Kristen Sanseverino, who grew up a few houses down from Mr. Carlston, said about 40 people were on top of the hill Wednesday night.

"He was so funny, whenever you passed him in the hallway he was always laughing," she said. "He was never in a bad mood, you always saw a smile on his face."

Mr. Carlston graduated from Fairport High School in 2009. He was the goalie for the varsity hockey team.

Salinas said Fairport High School is open to any student that wants to come in to talk with guidance counselors, teachers and other support staff.

Mr. Carlston was going to enter his sophomore year at Syracuse University where he was studying political science. Mr. Carlston played on the club hockey team. The university planned to hold a memorial on campus.

State Police Sgt. Robin Urbaniak said Mr. Carlston was driving east when he attempted to change lanes and lost control of his vehicle at 1:50 p.m. at mile marker 320 in Tyre, Seneca County. Mr. Carlston was reportedly ejected from his vehicle. Urbaniak said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Mr. Carlston sustained head and internal injuries in the crash and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight.

Fellow Fairport graduate Justin Wolf, 19, was also in the vehicle, but was not injured.

Police are investigating the crash and believe speed may have been a factor.
