So, now that Christmas is over and you're picking up needles off the carpet, you may be wondering how — and perhaps where — you can recycle that tree, rather than discarding it in the trash.
The answer: Residents may recycle their Christmas trees, free of charge, at several locations across Monroe County. Most drop-off locations and scheduled pickups will accept trees through the end of January.
In Webster, town residents may drop off trees to be recycled at any designated area of the Town Garage, 1005 Picture Parkway, from today (Dec. 27) through Feb. 29; do not include plastic bags.
For Village of Webster residents, there is curbside collection from the first week in January through the first week in February, and chips are available to residents.
Christmas trees that are recycled are generally ground into wood chips for use as landscape mulch.
Certain drop-off locations may also offer these wood chips to residents for use in their own yards, but residents are encouraged to bring their own containers.
All Monroe County residents participating in a free Christmas tree drop-off are asked to remove all decorations, plastic bags, wires and nails from trees to avoid damaging mulching equipment.
Other options include:
— Monroe County’s new ecopark, 10 Avion Drive, Chili, which will accept not only Christmas trees, but also unwanted holiday lights and gift packaging during its operating hours. For hours and other recycling alternatives, visit www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark or call (585) 753-7600.
— High Acres Recycling Center and Landfill, 425 Perinton Parkway, Perinton. Trees may be dropped off from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. through January, but there is a $1 fee for anyone who is not a resident of Perinton.
