North East Quadrant Advanced Life Support Inc. (NEQALS), which is based in Webster and provides primary advanced life support emergency medical services for the towns of Webster, Penfield and Ontario, held its annual meeting last month.

NEQALS, which began operations in 1988, also provides mutual aid for agencies throughout the eastern part of Monroe County and western Wayne County.

At the meeting, the following individuals were named serve on the 2012 Board of Directors. Robert Meddaugh, of Ontario, will be president; Syed Ahmed Mustafa, Webster, vice president; Bruce Rolland,  Webster, treasurer; Elizabeth Montgomery, Webster, secretary; Richard Prinzing and Christopher DeGroff, both of Webster; and Patrick Fedele, of Ontario.

Two seats on the board were recently vacated and NEQALS is seeking area residents who would be interested in serving as volunteer members of the board of directors. Interested individuals do not need to have experience in providing emergency services, but NEQALS would like to find those who have some knowledge of general medical or medical-legal issues, experience with other not-for-profit agencies, or other business experience.

The NEQALS Board of Directors meets once a month and provides oversight and strategic planning for delivery of emergency medical services in the agency’s operating territory.

Anyone interested in joining NEQALS as a director, or who is interested in more information, may go to www.neqals.org, or contact NEQALS at P.O. Box 905, Webster, 14580, or email neq.info@neqals.org.
In 2011, NEQALS responded to 2,576 calls for service, providing advanced life support to ambulances in West Webster, Union Hill, Ontario, Penfield and Irondequoit.

Of those calls, 275 were for respiratory-related illness, 233 for cardiac-related illness, and 184 for traumatic injuries. Agency paramedics participated in cardiac arrest saves, delivered one baby with Webster Fire and Union Hill ambulance, and supported fire departments at nine structure fires.

It was also announced at the meeting that NEQALS will launch a capital campaign this year to purchase new cardiac monitor/defibrillators at a cost of just over $100,000. Further details of the capital campaign will be announced shortly.
