Dog park in Ellison Park a possibility by summer

Pending approvals, construction work on a second leash-free dog park in Monroe County could start this spring at Ellison Park and be open for business this summer.

And, according to Monroe County Parks Director Larry Staub, the park will draw pooches and their owners from all over.

When the county opened a dog park in Greece in October 2009, the expectation was 200 people would join, Staub said. By the end of the year, nearly 400 registered users had signed on.

Approximately 1,300 people and their pets used the park in 2010, Staub said.

“There’s definitely a demand in Monroe County,” Staub told the Brighton Town Board earlier this week.

The 447-acre Ellison Park is in the towns of Brighton and Penfield.

The four-acre dog park, which would be located in the Brighton section of the park, north of Blossom Road, would cost $30,000 to $40,000 to build, Staub said.

Separate, fenced-off sections will allow small and large dogs to run and play separately. A large trail for all dogs will circle a man-made pond. Fencing will enclose the park as well as keep dogs from Irondequoit Creek.

As at Greece Canal Park, biodegradable bags will be provided as part of the registration fee required to use the park. Dog-waster containers will be provided, and emptied regularly.

The county plans to continue enforcing a leash law prohibiting unleashed dogs outside this park area, Staub said.

The park will be a nice facility for Monroe County and one that will be used, if the Greece Canal Park use is any indication, said Tom Robinson, a consultant who worked on the park design.

“The response was huge,” Robinson said. “We think it’s going to be substantial.”

Brighton Councilman Ray Tierney, who lives near the dog park site, said most people will be glad there is a place in the park for dogs to run free, while at the same time preserving beautiful parts of the park.

Supervisor Sandra Frankel said people will be eager to use the park.

“This has been a long time coming and will be very welcomed by the community and beyond,” Frankel said.
