Monroe County's 19th annual observances of International Coastal Cleanup begin this Saturday, Sept. 15.
Local volunteers along with the American Littoral Society, Ocean Conservancy, City of Rochester, Monroe County Parks Department with a growing number of local businesses and municipalities, continue to coordinate this year’s upcoming International Coastal Clean Up event.
This year’s event will mark the 19th annual year of local participation in this global event.
Last year, 6,368 volunteers cleaned and cataloged 93,644.45 pounds of debris along 262.18 miles of New York State's shoreline.
The event is coordinated throughout New York State by the American Littoral Society, and globally by the Ocean Conservancy.
Locally, there are nine registered shoreline sites this year, with events being held starting at 9 a.m. the next two Saturdays, Sept. 15 and 22, at all registered shoreline sites.
The sites to be cleaned up this Saturday, 15 are:
— Braddock Bay Marina, 105 East Manitou Rd, in Greece
— Payne Beach/Rose Marsh, meet at east end of Lakeshore Dr, just north of Lake Ontario State Parkway
— Goodwin Park, at the corner of Long Pond Rd. and Edgemere Dr. in Greece
— Seth Green Fishing Access, which is off St. Paul Street, near Norton St. in Rochester
— Irondequoit Bay Park West, in the small parking lot, at the bottom of Orchard Park Blvd, on Bayfront South, Irondequoit.
The sites to be cleaned up starting at 9 a.m. next Saturday, Sept. 22, are::
— Durand Eastman Park- meet on the beach, on Lake Shore Blvd., Irondequoit
— Hamlin Beach State Park- meet just inside the park entrance.
— Oatka Creek Park- meet in the upper parking lot, just inside the main park entrance
— Webster Park- meet in the fishing/pier lot on Lake Road, just west of Holt Road, Webster.
The International Coastal Cleanup event was established in 1986, when a staff person from the Ocean Conservancy decided to take some assertive actions to clean the litter from their local shores in South Padre Island, Texas. In 3 hours, 2,800 Texans picked up 124 tons of trash from 122 miles of coastline.

The event was brought to Monroe County in 1993 through the ambitions of a few rowdy youths; then known as the 4-H club the West Irondequoit Green Keepers.
As their 4-H club evolved to the Earth Girls, the Coastal Clean Up event did as well. Soon, simply through word of mouth and the dedication of these young people, the event spanned beyond municipal borders, held an increasing number of business sponsors and partners, and became an event embraced by the community.
