An online petition to award the Medal of Freedom to four West Webster firefighters has already hit a needed threshold. As of about 3 p.m. today, more than 25,000 people from across the nation have signed the online petition (available at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/award-medal-freedom-4-firefighters-who-were-ambushed-west-webster-new-york-christmas-eve-2012/nppN54ZN?utm_source=wh.gov&utm_medium=shorturl&utm_campaign=shorturl).

A total of 25,000 signatures is expected to trigger a response from the White House. The award is not guaranteed.

People from across the nation have been looking to honor the firefighters shot in an ambush on Christmas Eve. This petition wasx started through the White House website to give the four West Webster firefighters the Medal of Freedom.

The petition is asking for the president to award Mike Chiapperini, Tomasz Kaczowka, Joseph Hofstetter, and Theodore Scardino the designation. Chiapperini and Kaczowka were killed during the ambush. Scardino and Hofstetter are still recovering at Strong Hospital.
