Constituents across Wayne County and parts of Monroe County should feel uplifted about what Congressman Dan Maffei is doing for the economy, according to the glossy, full-color four-page mailing mailed to homes recently.

He’s getting our economy back on track and fighting to help people in his 25th Congressional District get back to work, the mailer read. Included in the message are picturesque images of Rochester, farmland and Lake Ontario. There are pictures of smiling construction and factory workers — and Maffei, complete with poppy in his lapel — posing with a veteran at a photo op.

Maffei has achieved results in the area since his election in 2008 — including his work to secure funding for veteran job training, the building of the Webster water plant and the re-paving of the Sodus-Williamson Airport runway, all of which he describes in the mailing.

“Working to create jobs and rebuild our economy is my first priority,” he wrote.

Of course, he used taxpayer dollars to tell us all this.

On the back of the brochure was written, “This mailing was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense.”

Thanks, Dan, for doing the job you were elected to do. But Wayne and Monroe county residents are far from being out of the woods when it comes to economic and job security. There are still struggling families out there that don’t have enough money for the postage needed to send a letter of concern to their congressman.

We know that such free mailings are a perk of incumbency. We know that Maffei isn’t the only lawmaker making use of the privilege and, in fact, is far from the worst offender. But the points remain.

People don’t need to be told they should feel good about their congressional representative in a spiffy mailer that cost them part of their milk or bread for the week. The continued easing of financial burdens and responsible fiscal use of the tax dollars will send that message home, loud and clear.
