Two Webster Police Department officers are stepping up to new roles this week.

Mike Chiapperini has been promoted from sergeant to lieutenant. Jason Thomas will replace Chiapperini as a sergeant.

With new jobs, there are new goals on the horizon.

Chiapperini hopes to learn new administration skills, in order to get into the swing of things in the more administrative role.

“I want to learn more about the administrative operations of the police department, to get more comfortable and learn more about it,” he said.

Thomas, who served as an officer prior, will focus on spearheading driving while intoxicated checkpoints, and wanted to focus on increased training for the force.

Though they are both excited for the new roles, the transition is bound to have bumps, they say.

“The transition from being an officer to now an acting supervisor will be different,” Thomas said. “People will come to me with questions. I’ll be delving into the supervisor’s role instead, with everyone looking to me for answers now.”

Chiapperini’s transition will be different, though.

“The biggest challenge will be moving inside,” he said. “Being behind a desk is going to be difficult.”

But no matter the role, law enforcement remains one thing they’re both passionate about.

“Every day is different, every call is different,” Thomas said. “You never know what you’re going to get into. It’s always fascinated me.”

The two were sworn in during an official ceremony Aug. 10. Officer Mark Reed was also sworn in as an officer at the ceremony. Reed was an officer with the city of Oneida in Madison County, after graduating from Morrisville-Eaton Central Schools and working as an officer in the village of Cazenovia, as well.
