Recent brush fires in the Webster and West Webster fire districts could have been very detrimental to local land, but quick work by local departments has kept the problem at bay.
Brush fires — or fire that is ignited in underlying brush, grass or wooded areas — are caused by a number of things, including unattended bonfires, parking on grass, kids playing with fire and a lack of rain, among other things.
Brush fires can be prevented before they occur if residents pay attention to five important tips, according to West Webster Fire Department Chief Anthony Gallante.
1. If you have a recreational fire, make sure it is contained by being below the surface level, or surrounded by bricks or rocks.
2. Don’t burn anything on hot, windy days — especially when there has been a lack of rain.
3. Have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby to dose out potential fires.
4. Fireworks are illegal to use and possess in New York. They quite frequently cause fires.
5. Educate children on the consequences of playing with fire.
