Grant Catalino tied a Major Lacrosse League single game scoring record with nine goals, including a double natural hat trick and one two-point goal, on Friday night at Sahlen's Stadium.
However, it was not enough as the Rochester Rattlers squandered a 13-8 lead and lost 19-16 to the Hamilton Nationals to remain winless at 0-5. Hamilton improved to 2-3, with both victories coming over the Rattlers.
Catalino, a Webster Schroeder and University of Maryland graduate, played in just his second professional game as last week he recorded one assist in his pro debut.
Catalino also set a Rattlers club single game scoring record with the nine goals, surpassing the old mark of eight scored by John Grant on June 16, 2007.
"It was awesome," Catalino said of his achievement. "A little different from last game, kind of got the jitters out. I kind of let the game come to me. I didn't do anything different today. The players around me played great.
"They were shutting off Jordan (Levine) and that opened up things for me."
Irondequoit native Joe Walters scored three goals for the Nationals, also including a two-pointer with 17.5 second left in the match, to secure the victory. Walters, who also is a Maryland grad, added three assists.
"It's kind of bitter-sweet coming here and playing against the Rattlers," Walters said. "But I'm happy we got the win.
The Nationals are the former Rochester Rattlers, who were purchased and moved to Toronto following the 2008 season when Rochester won its first Steinfeld Cup. The Nationals relocated to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada this season from Toronto.
The two teams return to action on Saturday night in Hamilton.
"It's the best thing to come off a loss is to have another game the next day," Catalino said.
