The Webster Central Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), in collaboration with the Webster School District, is hosting its 2012 Parent University, this year with the theme “Parent GPS … Destination Success,” this month.
“Parent University has something to support parents of children at all levels — elementary through high school,” said co-coordinator Paula Siviy.
During the “university,” eight, one-hour workshops are offered over three sessions. Parents may register for one workshop per session.
Parents with a 4-year old preparing for kindergarten may not want to miss a workshop titled “All You Need to Know to be Ready for Kindergarten” by experienced kindergarten teachers Beth Uetz and Jennifer Colucci, Siviy said.
Separate sessions will explain what New York’s Common Core Academic Standards mean for children, elementary and secondary.
Another workshop, by school counselors, will introduce parents to tools available in the district that will help them make good curriculum choices and position their children for success, whether they are college bound or eager to enter the work force right out of high school.
Additional sessions have been planned that that are designed to help families avoid some of the obstacles that can derail a student’s path to success.
Dr. Nate Riddle, wellness professional and local doctor of chiropractic, will talk to parents about the dangers inherent in prescription and synthetic drugs.
Spry Assistant Principal Joe Montemaro will help parents understand the promise and pitfalls of social media. He will also discuss the issues of cyber-bullying and sexting.
A panel of school district and local professionals will provide current information on how to reduce a student athlete’s risk of injury and help parents support their child’s athletic goals.
A final workshop will answer some of the nuts and bolts questions parents may have regarding the district’s new school schedule that will take effect this September.
Administrators, teachers, parents, and a representative from the Bayview YMCA will be available to answer questions.
Parents may register in advance for the university. Babysitting is available; however, parents must register in advance for the service.
