The NAMM Foundation has announced four local schools as “Best Communities for Music Education.”
West Irondequoit and Webster were among those distinguished in the 11th annual survey, which acknowledges schools and districts across the country.
State and local budget cuts have taken tolls on music education, though neither school put music on the chopping block for the 2010-11 school district spending plan.
The survey was conducted between Jan. 17 and March 12, available to all districts in the nation. The survey was hosted online, and measured by curriculum criteria and public support of music programs.
Schools scoring in the 80th percentile or higher in the grading process were awarded the distinction. Participants in the survey answered questions regarding funding, graduation requirements, music class participation and facilities, among other areas.
The survey was developed by The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service.
