More than a dozen Webster Schroeder students will showcase local fashions on the runway Saturday to raise money for the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Senior Nicole Mastrosimone coordinated “Clothes for a Cause” in memory of her 5-year-old cousin, Dante Mastrosimone. He died in November 2007 after battling an inoperable tumor on his brain stem. The young boy was in a coma for six months, with the tumor taking control of his functions. Nicole Mastrosimone said she chose to raise money for Golisano Children’s Hospital because of the support her cousin and the family received at the hospital.
“They’re so caring and they’ve been through so many situations, but they treat each patient with care,” Mastrosimone said. “They do a lot for the kids.”
Local stores — Rue 21, Tuxedo Park, One Enchanted Evening, G. Inc. by Victor Gomez and Too Lovely Boutique — donated clothing for the dozen or so teens to wear on a makeshift runway at the Rochester Auditorium Theatre.
The fashion show is part of the high school’s senior project, which requires students to create a community service plan, doing something to benefit the community or their future goals. Projects range from selling raffle tickets to making slide shows for the graduation ceremony.
Mastrosimone says her project was a little more complex, however. Her interest in fashion helped her plan the fashion show, as well as get it sponsored. With each $5 student ticket, or $10 adult ticket, comes one dessert to enjoy while the “models” walk down the runway. Music will be provided by Whirlin’ Disc DJs, of Penfield.
Mastrosimone has sold more than 50 pre-sale tickets, and hopes to bring in 150 people to enjoy the show.
